As Barry White approached the end of his teenage years, he began to notice that girls were attracted to his deep voice. They found it extremely sexy and he found that he wound up in many a young girl’s bed purely as a result of the strength and appeal of his voice.

Then one day someone told him that a deep voice signalled higher testosterone levels and a “higher male quality”. He said it became clear to him that women preferred men with deeper voices and that a deep voice meant more sex. He told people that it was never possible to make what he called a “normal phone call”. He said explaining the effect: “I’d pick up the phone to make a long-distance call and ask the operator for assistance and hear back, ‘My, but you have a beautiful voice.’ This happened to me wherever I went. I was uneasy about it at the time but eventually grew used to it.”

A small extract from White Music, Tom Rubython’s new biography of Barry White published in the USA on 12th April.
